AFL clubs love to court the celebrities when they hit town.
A few spring to mind, such as Cher and St Kilda, which if the scuttlebut is true, led to a close, ahem, friendship between the singer and legendary St Kilda star and party boy, Trevor Barker.
Back in the day, Essendon courted and secured the Village People, NFL superstar Joe Montana visited Geelong, while we all remember a few years back when a sheepish Rob Lowe joined the Magpies for a chorus of “Good Old Collingwood Forever” while in Melbourne for a spot of filming.
9RAW: Cruise and Holmes land in Melbourne
Now one of the biggest names of all – Tom Cruise – has landed in Melbourne to accompany wife Katie Holmes while she films a horror flick at the Docklands Studio.
Doubtless, Eddie McGuire will be moving quickly to invite Cruise, a noted sports fan, to the Collingwood-Essendon game on Friday night and Cruise will surely be impressed with an 80,000-plus crowd at the MCG. There won’t be much else happening in Melbourne this Friday night.
But if Cruise is smart, he’ll politely beg Eddie off and venture instead to the Docklands on Sunday afternoon. The winner of the Saints v Cats will likely win the premiership and Cruise will likely want to attach himself to a winner.
